Fine silver, heirloom wedding rings, earrings, pin and ear-studs, silk.
My client’s mother was an antiques dealer so this is an edit of all sorts of bits and pieces. I was most worried about the malachite studs, they looked like horrible green worms. I hoped they were not important. R: “these have to go in, because my mother’s heart was in Africa. When I placed them together later, I realised that they made a heart and R visibly relaxed when I pointed this out, so I knew they would be a feature. The piece of paper holding the ‘worms’ on which R’s mother had written “Malawi 1991” was tucked behind the piece.
R’s mother wore the gold sleepers daily, so they’re chained together to retain movement and stitched to the pieces, along with wedding rings, with silk in a colour that R’s mother loved. As most of the elements were ear studs and I knew that the piece was destined for R’s niece, I wanted them to be available for wear in the future. The two forms are presented so that they can be lifted out of the frame, and the ear studs removed. When any element is removed there are beautifully burnished holes to look at.
